My Little Pony is a series of cartoons based on a popular girl-oriented toyline. Initially aired in the eighties, they were shown in reruns on Disney Channel in the nineties.
My Little Pony 'n' Friends
In the original series, the ponies acted like horses and communicated via telepathy.
My Little Pony Tales
My Little Pony Tales debuted in 1992 and portrayed the ponies as anthropomorphic. This would form some of the basis for the revival about twenty years later.
Beginning in 2003, films and shorts were released to DVD as a revival of the classic series. This eventually set the basis for the 2010 series.
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
A spiritual revival of MLPT, this series debuted on The Hub and was animated by the same person as The Powerpuff Girls. Because of this and the diverse cast of characters, the series has become a phenomenally popular internet meme. This has led to the show becoming popular with teenagers and young adults, especially males. These followers call themselves "bronies" (a portmanteau of "brother" and "ponies"). The female equivalents are known as "pegasisters" (a portmanteau of "pegasus" and "sisters"). A documentary about the "brony" phenomenon is in development.
Three short films were released during the original show's run.
